這一年的秋天，慈禧、光緒先後去世，末代皇帝宣統在內外交困中登基。我們也許無法猜測，葉景呂是出於甚麼目的拍攝的這張一身西洋裝束的肖像，是追求時髦？還是另有含義？

Ye Jinglü parece mesmo um cavalheiro completo: usa um chapéu formal de feltro preto, uma camisa com gola Eton, com uma gravata com o complexo nó Windsor, muito em voga na época. Este estilo de traje era muito formal no Ocidente. Posa sob um fundo de cenário representando o portão de um jardim.

Ye Jinglü parece mesmo um cavalheiro completo: usa um chapéu formal de feltro preto, uma camisa com gola Eton, com uma gravata com o complexo nó Windsor, muito em voga na época. Este estilo de traje era muito formal no Ocidente. Posa sob um fundo de cenário representando o portão de um jardim.
O retrato é bonito e elegante mesmo hoje em dia, com algo de ídolo de cinema. Ye Jinglü continua a usar uma trança e nesse ano mais um imperador Qing, Xuantong, subiu ao trono. Pode apenas especular-se sobre se o motivo pelo qual Ye Jinglü optou por um estilo completamente ocidental terá sido a moda ou outro. Na China daqueles dias, as pessoas de prestígio usavam longas túnicas e casacos de mandarim, considerados tesouros nacionais chineses. Vestir em estilo ocidental parece mostrar desrespeito à opinião geral.

Ye Jinglü appears every bit the gentleman, wearing a black wool dress hat, an Eton-collar shirt, with a necktie in the complex but then very fashionable Windsor knot. This style of attire was very formal in the West. The studio props are in Ancient Roman style.
The portrait looks handsome and elegant even today, with something of the matinee idol about it. He still wears a pigtail, and that year another, Qing emperor, Xuantong, took the throne. We can only speculate as to why Ye Jinglü opted for a completely Western style: for fashion or for another meaning? In China those days, people of status wore long gowns and mandarin jacket that were considered Chinese national treasures. Dressing in Western style seems to show defiance to general opinion.
