1915年5月9日，袁世凱以中華民國大總統的名義，批准了與日本簽訂喪權辱國的不平等條約《二十一條》，消息傳來，中國各大城市的學生、市民紛紛舉行集會、遊行，群起反對。5月9日這一天，被愛國民眾稱為“國恥日”。 這張肖像中的背景依然是西洋鄉村風景，葉景呂坐在靠背椅上，架著二郎腿，右手托著下巴做沉思狀。在民國的政治風雲中，葉景呂算是一個家境殷實，卻又毫無發言權的平頭百姓，然而，從他刻意黏貼的字條中，卻不難看出一個普通中國人對國運的擔憂。

No seu 40º ano de vida, Ye Jinglü tirou o seu retrato no “Dia da Humilhação Nacional”. No dia 9 de Maio daquele ano, Yuan Shikai, na qualidade de Grande Presidente da República da China, aprovou as “Vinte e Uma Exigências”, um tratado desigual assinado com o Japão que resultou na humilhação nacional e na perda da soberania. Os patriotas chineses chamaram-lhe o “Dia da Humilhação Nacional”.
O fundo de estilo ocidental aparece novamente. Ye Jinglü está sentado numa cadeira de pau-rosa, com as pernas cruzadas e a mão direita a segurar o queixo, uma pose de profunda reflexão. No meio da agitação política da República da China, ele é apenas um cidadão comum sem qualquer importância, apesar de estar bem na vida. Mas do ponto de vista da pessoa que está sentada, a pose e a nota que escreveu e colou no álbum, é clara a preocupação de um cidadão comum com o destino da China.

Ye Jinglü took his portrait on the “Day of National Humiliation” in his “year of being 40.” On May 9 that year, Yuan Shikai, as Grand President of the Republic of China, approved the “Twenty-One Demands,” an unequal treaty concluded with Japan that resulted in national humiliation and loss of sovereignty. Chinese patriots named it the “Day of National Humiliation.”
The Western backdrop appears yet again. Ye Jinglü sits on a rosewood side chair, his legs crossed and his right hand supporting his jaw, a pose of deep reflection. In the political turmoil of the Republic of China, he is just a common citizen without any say at all, despite being well-off. But from the sitter’s expression, pose and the note he wrote and glued on the album it is plain to see the concerns of an ordinary citizen about China’s fate.
