推翻清政府的大規模武裝起義，從1911年秋天打響，直到第二年，各地局勢仍動盪不定。雖然葉景呂的眼神中絲毫沒有映射出時代的風雲詭譎，但他已剪了辮子。照片中的葉景呂，身穿棉袍，背著雙手，之前雙手都是自然分開的。西洋背景中帷幔挽起，流蘇低垂，道具是雙層花几，三盆植物。

葉景呂的早年肖像雖保持著中國人喜歡的全身照，但受西方審美影響的他，拍攝時基本上不直視鏡頭，而和鏡頭保持一定的角度，這在當時的民國初年也是時髦之舉。 民國廢除了帝號紀年，葉景呂在說明中特別提到，因為實行新曆，所以“實年”31歲。

Ano da fundação da República da China. Embora a expressão de Ye Jinglü não transpareça em nada profunda transformação que estava em curso, a fotografia mostra-o pela primeira vez sem trança. Ye Jinglü veste uma longa túnica acolchoada em algodão, as mãos atrás das costas, em contraste com a postura anterior na qual os seus braços estão caídos naturalmente. No cenário de estilo ocidental apresenta uns reposteiros com borlas penduradas. Os adereços incluem uma peanha com dois níveis e três vasos de flores. 

Esta foto tem uma nota na qual Ye refere que, devido ao novo calendário que entrava em vigor, tinha nesse ano 31 anos na “idade real”. Visto que as notas da fotografia de 1911 foram escritas com base no calendário tradicional chinês, tinha também 31 anos nessa fotografia.

Nos seus primeiros retratos, Ye Jinglü continuou a tirar fotografias de corpo inteiro, um estilo preferido pelos chineses. Contudo, devido à influência estética ocidental, nunca olhava directamente para a lente, mantendo um certo ângulo. Esta era também uma forma em voga nos primeiros anos da República da China. Podemos dizer com certeza que Ye Jinglü começou a tirar sistematicamente o seu retrato anualmente a partir deste ano. Se analisarmos com cuidado, vemos que as fotografias tiradas entre 1912 e 1918 mostram que o seu corpo e olhos apontam para uma direcção diferente em anos alternados – num ano para a direita, e no ano seguinte para a esquerda!

This is the year of the founding of the Republic of China. Although Ye Jinglü’s expression betrays nothing of the changing nature of the times, for the first time the photo shows him without a pigtail. Ye Jinglü wears a cotton-wadded long gown, his hands behind him, in a departure from the previous stance where his hands just fall naturally. In the Western backdrop we see from tied-back curtains with hanging tassels. The props include a double-layer flower stand and three pots of plants.

He also wrote a special note saying that, because a new calendar was now in force, he was 31 years old in “actual age” that year. Since the notes on the 1911 photo were written on the basis of the traditional Chinese calendar, he was 31 years old in that picture too. 

In his early portraits Ye Jinglü kept taking full figure photographs, a style much favored by the Chinese. However, due to Western aesthetic influence, he never looked straight at the lens but kept a certain angle. This was also a fashionable way in the early years of the Republic of China. We can say with certainty that Ye Jinglü started systematically to have his portrait done annually from this year on. If you look carefully, you see that the pictures taken between 1912 and 1918 show that his body and eyes face a different direction in alternate years – one year right, the next year left!
